Collection: Argentite

Argentite is the high-temperature cubic form of silver sulfide (Ag₂S) and one of the most important ore minerals of silver. When cooled below 173°C, it transforms into the lower-temperature form known as Acanthite, though the original crystal shape is usually preserved — meaning many “Argentite” specimens are actually pseudomorphs of Acanthite after Argentite.

Argentite forms striking metallic grey to black crystals with a brilliant, sometimes iridescent, luster. It often appears as massive, granular, or dendritic (branch-like) structures and may occur with other silver-bearing minerals such as native silver, galena, and sphalerite.

Rich deposits of Argentite are found in hydrothermal silver veins around the world, notably in Mexico, Peru, Germany, and the United States. Fine, well-crystallized specimens from Guanajuato, Mexico, are especially prized by collectors for their sharp crystal forms and metallic brilliance.
